English-Chinese Translation is a course that studies basic translation theories, methods and skills. It is a course characterized with theory and practice combination. It provides students with basic theories to help guide their translation practice. It also introduces some basic Chinese translation history to help them understand the important role that translation has played in shaping Chinese society, economy and culture. Through the comparison and contrast of Chinese and English cultures and languages, the course helps students to understand and master the necessary translation methods and skills. With guided translation practice, the course intends not only to improve students’ Chinese and English language competence, but help them develop their own translation conceptions. It is hoped that by the end of the semester, students will be able to translate some short literary essays, stories and non-literary texts and be able to identify the merits and flaws of other’s translation. Finally, the student will be able to construct a translation with an intended purpose and try to achieve faithfulness, smoothness and appropriateness in their translation. With the foundation the course set, students will be able to more easily adapt to their future job demand through self study.
